What She Left Behind

A stuffed penguin
he gave,
on their first date
when they were young
we were so in love.

A shiny dark coin
from the collection
her grandfather passed on to her
before he left
I know she missed him dearly

A red scarf
She had loved
that her dad gave her on a trip they took
to Canada
why did we never get to travel?

A tube of lipstick
she wore,
that represented the walk down the aisle
when they tied the knot
that was the happiest day of my life.

A short book
she wrote,
that represents the diagnosis
of her disease
she never looked so beautiful.

A healthy red rose
the last thing he set on her grave,
that represented when she was healthy
and alive
I’ll never forget.
