Did you know that a recent study showed that by 2030, nearly half of Americans will be obese? However, the study showed that children ages 10-12 who participate and are active in physical activity are 1/10 less likely to be obese later in their life. While this may not seem like a huge difference, it is one all the same. There are many important reasons why people need to be active. Staying active makes people happy, keeps people fit, and allows both children and adults to be socially active while exercising as well.
First of all, physical activities are important because they make people happy. While some people would disagree because they don’t like to exercise, it has been scientifically proven that being physically active releases a chemical in your brain called endorphins. What most people don’t know is that endorphins are the chemical that makes you happy. So although you might not notice it, you actually are happier than if you weren’t exercising at the time. Also, a recent study showed that people who did sports were not as likely to committing suicide due to the endorphins in your brain releases during exercise.
Next, physical activity makes you more healthy. While this may seem obvious, exercising reduces body fat, requiring less food and protein to feed your fat. For instance, Regular exercise has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity, cardiovascular fitness, and body composition, yet decrease blood pressure and blood fat levels. In contrast, a lack of regular exercise can lead to significant increases in belly fat, which increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and early death. What this means is that regular exercise can improve health in many ways.
Lastly, doing exercise not only allows us to be healthy physically but socially as well. In fact, one of the top reasons for a middle school survey for why people do sports was to hang out with friends, not to exercise. For an example, I have done Cross-Country since the beginning of my 7th-grade year in middle school. That first year I did it, I did it because I like to run. However, once I met the people that did the same sport, I do it to have fun with my friends. Physical activity allows us to meet new people and make new friends.
As you have read, physical activity can impact anybody’s life in many different positive ways, from being healthy, socially interactive, and making people happy. So why not be happy and healthy while hanging out with friends and colleagues… all at the same time?
